Q & A

Why am I anxious ?

You are anxious for several reasons. We tend to explain anxiety disorders by three different buckets of causes.

First the biological ones in which we find the heredity, the lifestyle (enough exercise, a good diet, no or very low usage of alcohol, the sleep…), the sex ratio, the good usage of treatments…

Second, some psychological reasons like the type of personality, the level of stress perceived, how the subject cope with stress, some eventual traumas during adulthood and/or childhood, the type of self-esteem, self-confidence and assertiveness, the life story…

Third reason, the role of the environment.

Is there enough “good” stress to stimulate the person ? Is the environment benevolent enough ? Are there enough resources around the person ?

In general, is the environment is perceived like helpful or harmful ?

Each person is the addition of all of these factors (and much more than this) and the anxiety is the response (excessive when there is a disorder) from its nervous system from its environment, filtered by its psychology (the way it sees the world).

Why is it better to treat my anxiety disorder ?

Many studies show that it’s better to have psychotherapy in addition to, when it’s needed, a biological treatment, to reduce the influence and the impacts of the anxiety in somebody’s life.

The prior objective of the Clinical Psychologist is to help his patient without any drug when it’s possible. Only time and experience say if it’s possible or not.

It’s always the person’s decision to accept or not a biological treatment in addition to its psychotherapy.

The ideal situation is to avoid any treatment when it’s possible.

A biological treatment without any CBT psychotherapy could help to alleviate the stress but it cannot help the person to reduce the avoidances which fuels the anxiety in every day’s life.

Only the psychotherapy allows that. That’s why psychotherapy, especially CBT is fundamental to reduce the impact of the anxiety in the life of the person, with or without any drug.
